In 2005 the CLS Class was born. It originates from being an E-Class chassis down below, which had improved before the introduction of the CLS. The basic CLS shape was first displayed at the 2003 Frankfurt Motor Show, dubbed the Vision CLS Concept. Mercedes was swamped with requests it was speculated that they might ever decide to put the car into production. However in 2004 the car was displayed in virtual production-ready form at the New York Auto Show. Later that year, the CLS55 AMG hot rod was unveiled at Paris and the cars arrived in dealers in late April 2005. The range comprised the CLS350, the CLS500 and the CLS55 AMG petrol models as well as the CLS320CDI diesel. The racy CLS55 AMG was not long for this world, replaced in short order by the big capacity, naturally-aspirated CLS63 AMG in July 2006.

Needless to say, there aren't too many saloon cars within this price bracket that are as exciting or as subtle & classy, without being super charged. It has rewritten the standard to a saloon & over time they hold their worth exceedingly well. The new CLS-Class offers a range of outstanding engines, including the stunning CLS 350 CGI. This potent V6 features direct-injection petrol technology designed to improve performance and reduce emissions. Its precision technology to maximise efficiency, the CLS 350 CGI consumes around 10% less fuel than the conventional CLS 350 first offered in the CLS-Class range. Yet it also produces more power, more torque and can accelerate from 0 - 62 mp/h in just 6.7 seconds. That's around 0.3 seconds quicker than before. The remaining petrol units include two V8s - the impressive CLS 500 and the amazing CLS63 AMG, which does 0-62 mph in only 4.5 seconds.

Whereas, with the diesel models, the CLS 320 CDI offers, an excellent combination of performance and efficiency, with combined fuel consumption figures of 37.2 mpg. The Automatic Climate Control system comes as standard in the CLS-Class ensuring a thoroughly agreeable climate at all times. A four-zone Thermotronic climate control system comes as standard on the CLS 500 and CLS 63 AMG (optional on the CLS 350 CGI and CLS 320 CDI) and offers, four separately controllable climate zones. With its low stature and distinguished, arching roofline and pillar less side windows, the CLS-Class has classic coupÈ good looks. Yet it also offers the size and presence of a saloon, along with four-door practicality.

The latest CLS-Class incorporates several new features to enhance its elegant styling. There's a redesigned radiator grille with two louvres and a sporty new air intake grille. The rear bumper has been re-sculpted to accommodate new trapezoidal-shaped exhaust pipes. In addition, the exterior mirrors are now even more aerodynamic and feature a striking new indicator design. The car is also equipped with striking LED brake lights as standard.

A world first from Mercedes-Benz, Pre-Safe is an award-winning safety system that triggers enhanced protection if an accident is deemed imminent. It is standard on all CLS-Class models as of June 2006. Sensors fitted to the vehicle for the Brake Assist system and ESPÆ programme are utilised to detect potential danger, and the following measures are taken in the moments preceding an accident:

• Electric windows and the electric sunroof are closed - leaving a small gap
• Seat belts are tightened
• The front passenger seat is moved into a position that offers the best protection (only in conjunction with memory seats - optional equipment on all CLS models, standard on CLS 63 AMG)

Outstanding communication and entertainment technology is a key feature of the latest CLS-Class. Standard fitting includes, the new enhanced Audio 20 system features an MP3 compatible radio/CD player and Bluetooth connectivity for safe, hands-free calls. An elegantly designed 5" colour display makes the system incredibly user-friendly. The optional Media Interface socket is another addition to the new CLS-Class range. Located in the glove box, this enables you to plug in your iPod or other MP3 player and control it via the head unit or multi-function steering wheel, rather than the player itself. All CLS-Class models also offer DAB digital radio as an option, so you can enjoy more channels and superior audio quality.

Their three-year warranty means complete peace of mind for a full three years after you buy a new Mercedes-Benz. There's no mileage limitation and you're covered for parts and labour charges incurred in rectifying defects in materials or workmanship.
