So you need a new car? Aside from super cars and the classics that we play with at the weekends, what to play with during those mundane hours of work, very rarely pleasure, during the week? Luckily the motor industry has compiled a group of cars in the "Executive Class". They have been manufactured with the petrol head, senior management, director, boy at heart, in mind. Executive cars need to be comfortable, fast, luxurious and not forgetting spacious storage for those all important golf clubs and accessories.
As the executive car field expands, so do the manufacturers. The best of this year's cars (2008), are available from Vauxhall, Range Rover, Jaguar, Nissan and Lotus, to name a few. Some of the producers are known for their smaller and possibly considered lower grades of car. However it is now becoming apparent that even these manufacturers are stepping up the game and producing some exceptional classes of vehicles.
In no particular order, I have found these to be among some of the favourite's:
Vauxhall Insignia
Vauxhall have produced a replacement for the Vectra, the Insignia. It has emerged with a new style, one that will resonate throughout the rest of the Vauxhall fleet and comes loaded with technology, making it deal for company drivers.
Citroen C5
Citroen have also built a car that gets to the executive class. The C5 exudes class, comfort, safety and technology. Again, it has set the pace regarding style and excitement throughout the production line.
New Ford Kuga
Ford, again, usually quite dull in parts, has compiled the new Ford Kuga. A hatchback 4x4 with a little oomph at your boot. Unfortunately the dash looks like it was taken out of the Ford Transit Van from 07 and the plastic consul around the gear selector is very flimsy. Overall though it has all the specifications you could want and plenty of space for the family. Style and ability of a Range Rover, with engines and TDCI of the Focus. Practical, comfortable, executive to family class car.
Renault Laguna Coupe
Renault are serious about their input also. They have developed a new Laguna Coupe, a sporty, exciting 4RD, consisting of a V6 TD.
BMW X6
BMW X6 is way in front of any other executive car that they have done before. The power and technology of a 4x4, but it handles as a sports car, thanks to its DPC controls. (Naturally the 5 Series is the still benchmark executive car for many reasons).
Subaru Impreza Diesel
The Subaru Impreza Diesel is speedy and polished, consistent with looks and comfort. Overall a breakthrough for the manufacturer, as it is there first diesel boxer engine.
Saab 9-5
The Saab 9-5 is also a fabulous executive car. Practical, safe and handling all are outstanding and underwhelming. Its means of technology, comfort and regard for the environment are also major pluses with this model.
Volvo S80
Volvo have pipped everyone to the post with their safety features again. With the S80, a Blind Spot Information System where a camera is mounted under each wing mirror to detect vehicles in the driver's blind spot. As always Volvo practicality and comfort is paramount. There is a great choice of engines to boot.
Land Rover Range Rover Vogue
The Land Rover Range Rover Vogue surpasses luxury and superb off-road ability. A supercharged V8 engine. shows that it is a serious choice for anyone considering an executive car with a difference. Luxury interior as expected with a model of this class and with the Range Rover it is as able off the road as it is cruising on it. The Land Rover LRX is an equal in all above stated categories but it surpasses in the field of eco warrior.
Lexus IS-F
Lexus still are top of the class with regard to executive range vehicles and it doesn't look to change. The IS-F is a good looking number, able to take on certain German makers. It's sleek and sexy, and set to put a twinkle in the range.
Jaguar XF
And finally the Jaguar XF, it has been hailed as the best executive car of the year. It has also been stated that it could make or break one of the oldest manufacturers of our era. New styling and approach have already turned heads and they have stated that it has it all. Standard models come with revolutionary specifications and leading industry equipment. Highlights include the all-new JaguarDrive Selectorô, JaguarSenseô, a smart technical solution introducing touch or proximity-sensing control for overhead console lights and glove box release and the optional top-of-the-range 440 watt Bowers & Wilkins speaker system.
So get out those golf clubs and test drive them all at your nearest car dealership this year!
