Home owners have an asset to secure the loan amount against, which may make it easier for them to borrow bigger amounts of money from high street lenders, especially in today's turbulent financial markets which all started in the USA with large sums of money being lent to high risk borrowers.

Whatever the reason you have for borrowing money the amount the lenders will loan you is dependent on the value of your equity (i.e. the value of your home or car less the outstanding balance you may still owe), if you have a good credit rating some lenders will offer you over 100% of the value of your equity, but this will be quite hard to finding the current economic market. If you do not have a valuable asset to borrow money against then your considered a bigger risk to lend to and you may be referred to a sub-prime lender. They normally charge higher interest rates than that available to the Prime lenders, but this is purely due to the fact that they have security against their loans. There are still many options in the unsecured market. One advantage in the sub-prime market is that stiff competition for your business does tend to keep the interest rates from going to high.
